You have to plant radishes - even if you won't eat them. They are the first thing to go in, they're ready in 25 days (!!!) so they're the first to come back out, you can keep replanting and replanting them, and they are a good slug barrier to go around all your other plants - which is the main reason to plant them even if you're not eating them. Also, kale, swiss chard and arugula are easy & cold weather hardy. Should I mention that carrots (the small globe ones if planting early), beets, and parsnips don't take up much space...bush beans later...chives, sweet onions, potatoes, rhubabarb, broccoli!, brussel sprouts!!, canteloupe!!!, PUMPKINS!, CUCUMBERS!!, NASTURTIUMS AND OTHER EDIBLE FLOWERS!!!!!! (ahh, spring is in the air.) (do you have room for all that?)
Didn't know slugs were repelled by radishes; thanks for the tip! I had them sequestered in one corner but will intersperse with lettuce, instead. Got a Better Boy Tomato from Aunt B tonight and trellised sweet pea (my favorite!!) from MomandDad. Kale is a good idea. I jsut discovered baked kale - holy potato chip, Batman! - it's awesome! Nasturtiums go in my flower box. Cukes, definite, pumpkins ...meh. Again, want to be successful this first year so My Beloved will feel his efforts were fruitful (frutiful, get it? garden humor!!!)
