  1. There's one book I want to read but I'm not sure you'd like it: Bill Bryson's A Short History of Private Life: http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2010/jun/06/bryson-at-home-book-review

  2. OK, how about:
Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese (excellent writing, great sweeping story)
The Checklist Manifesto by Atul Gawande (you've probably read him, but just in case)
The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton (rambling, but appealing)
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield (read this a while ago but recall liking it)
    And a few more:
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann
The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender

J, as I recall, you prefer non-depressing books–so no tearjerkers on this list. Good luck!

  3. Quite right, E; thanks for the suggestions! And, Jen, My Beloved has been after me to read Bill Bryson (even stole a book from Dad) but, alas, I am hooked on the ebook and seems silly to buy a book I already own just to have it electronically!
