The Three Day Effect

(With props to the NYT's Matt Richtel and NPR)

We've just returned from four days in an environmental commune in Decatur, GA visiting old friends and their 5yo & 3mos daughters.  I had to work part of the time, and monitor my blackberry outbound and inbound, but we slept in and didn't watch TV/video/movies/check email the entire trip.  It was downright hedonistic!

My 3-day effect kicked in on Sunday en route to the aquarium.  There was something about the silly giggle of a pair of young girls that completely refreshed my brain.  We were car-bound and one was eating a banana which made the other start laughing.  No more complicated than that, but they laughed like it was The Greatest Joke Ever Told.  What could be funnier than eating a banana?  Side-splitting, breathless, tee-heeing; wild carefree abandon.  It was infectious and liberating, and one of the loveliest manmade sounds.
